     Unarchiving Software Titles

Tools to unarchive each of the archive types used throughout this site can be found at Unarchive Tools. Each of these tools contains a directly executable (i.e. not compressed) unarchive tool, so as to avoid the "Catch-22" of having to already have the unarchive tool to unarchive it! Unfortunately, web browser security considerations typically make it no longer possible to directly download executable files (usually identified by their filename extensions: .exe, .com, etc). Accordingly, all unarchive tools have had their extensions changed to .EUT (DOS/Windows EXE Unarchive Tools), .MUT (Macintosh Unarchive Tool) and .2UT (Apple IIGS Unarchive Tool) to ensure that they can be downloaded without issue.

DOS Unarchive Tool: For DOS titles downloaded from this site, also download the PKUNZIP.EUT file and rename the .EUT extension to .EXE. Copy this file onto your PC or PC emulator. Run from within the MS-DOS environment, the command "pkunzip -d filename.zip" will expand the software title.

Windows 3.x Unarchive Tool: For Windows 3.x titles downloaded from this site, either use PKUNZIP (per above) or download WinZip_Installer.EUT and rename the .EUT extension to .EXE. Run this file from within a Windows 3.x environment and it will install WinZip. Using Windows File Manager, drag and drop Windows 3.x title downloaded from this archive onto the installed WinZip executable and it will expand the software title. Alternately, you may start WinZip and then use its File|Open dialog to select the downloaded software title and expand it.

Macintosh Unarchive Tool: For Macintosh titles downloaded from this site, download the StuffIt_Expander_5.5_Installer.MUT tool and rename it to delete the ".MUT" extension. You may also wish to replace the "_" symbols embedded in the filename with spaces, yielding a program named "StuffIt Expander 5.5". This file is a directly executable Macintosh program. Drag and Drop Macintosh titles downloaded from this site onto the StuffIt Expander icon and it will expand them.

Apple IIGS Unarchive Tool: To be provided when the Apple IIGS archive is populated.

A final note. A small number of the DOS and Windows software titles may contain .IMG files, which are typically floppy disk images. To open these files, use WinImage, available in the Windows 3.1 archive of this site as file WINIMG61.ZIP.
