Mac OS 9 Archive Is Now Populated, Ready for Use
We are pleased to announce that the Mac OS 9 software archive is now fully populated and ready for your use. Mac OS 9 was a different kind of Mac OS release. It was not so much the next version of Mac OS following Mac OS 8.6. Rather, it was the bridge between Mac OS and the soon-to-be-announced Mac OS X. It was unique, and because of that, it gets its own unique archive, featuring titles specific to only Mac OS 9. Most of the titles in the Mac OS PPC archive will also run under Mac OS 9, but the inverse is not true: titles in the Mac OS 9 archive will by and large not run under earlier versions of Mac OS. Most of these titles have been verified on Mac OS 9.2.2, running on a G4 Cube, and are known to work. However, it was not possible to verify some of the hardware-specific titles due to the lack of the associated hardware on the G4 Cube. If you download and test one or more hardware-specific titles and find that they do not execute successfully on Mac OS 9, please let us know at support@inverary.net and we will update the archive accordingly. As mentioned above, in addition to the Mac OS 9 specific software titles presented in the Mac OS 9 archive, most (if not all) of the non hardware specific titles in this site's Mac OS PPC archive should also run successfully under Mac OS 9. Almost all of these titles are compressed as StuffIt Archives (.sit files), and so they can be downloaded and unarchived using StuffIt Exander or similar tools. In all cases, simply drop the software title onto the "unstuff" tool and it will be expanded. For those of you with Classic Macs, you may use StuffIt Expander directly. StuffIt Expander 6.x is recommended; each title in the archive was stuffed using DropStuff 6.0, the archiving counterpart to the StuffIt Expander 6.0 unarchiving tool. If you have access to a Power Mac running Mac OX X 10.4 Tiger or 10.5 Leopard, there are native versions of StuffIt Expander (versions 10 onwards) that will run there and can be used to unstuff any software title in this archive. Finally, for users on modern Macs, The Unarchiver, from www.theunarchiver.com, is recommended. This excellent and completely free offering will unarchive dozens of popular formats, including StuffIt Archives. Please note that a number of these titles contain within them compressed disk images (.dsk, img and others). To open these, you will typically need to work on a classic Mac, giving you access to DiskCopy, MountIt, DropDisk, DiskDup+ and other similar disk image tools. If none of the above works for you, some users have reported success opening disk images with WinImage running under Windows. Versions of WinImage are available targeted from Windows 3.1 all the way up to Windows 11. If you encounter any troubles downloading or unarchiving any of these files, please send an email to support@inverary.net detailing the issue(s) you have encountered . We will make every effort to (a) get back to you quickly and (b) resolve the issue(s). |
