New Titles Added to DOS Archive

Summary: Five new software titles have been added to this site's DOS archive. This post provides details on each.

Post Body: Five new titles have been added to the DOS archive. All may be of some interest to DOS afficienados:
  • DOSVIEW.ZIP - DOSView is a small, fast image viewer for DOS which supports most common image formats (JPG, GIF, PNG, etc.) and a wide range of video cards, understanding the available video modes of each card, including the VESA ones (you may need your card's VESA TSR loaded to take advantage of the VESA modes).

"DOSVIEW -l" lists all the available modes
"DOSVIEW -k" lists all the supported key commands while DOSView is running
"DOSVIEW -h" provides much more information on DOSView and what it can do.

  • PICTVIEW.ZIP - PICTView is also an image viewer for DOS, and like DOSVIEW it supports most common image formats. PICTVIEW has a Win3.x counterpart and both work quite well. The DOS version has a decided quirk: it produces oddball visual artifacts outside of the borders of any photo being viewed, but the photo itself is displayed as it should be.

  • FILEV011.ZIP - FileView is a classic dual pane file manager for DOS, but unlike most, it understands the available video modes of your video card and uses them to provide a very attractive graphical/GUI interface. FileView uses the usual two panes, plus a configurable set of 40 buttons along the bottom rows of the screen to provide all the functionality needed. Documentation is skimpy, and critically, it does not tell you how to exit the program! By trial and error, we learned that ALT-X does the job!

  • GOPHERUS.ZIP - Gopherus is exactly what the name suggests - a Gopher client for DOS. Gopherus provides a simple and straighforward Gopher interface and is easy for an experienced Gopher user to navigate. Gopherus requires a packet driver to be installed and available, and so typically you will need a NIC and the packet driver for that NIC. If you have this in place and loaded, Gopherus detects it and uses it seamlessly (at least in our experience).

Note that technically, gopherus is not a new add to this site - it was listed in the Gopher Clients archive, but is now being highlighted in the DOS archive as well.

  • 4XBTM7.ZIP - 4XBTM7 is a unique collection of very useful general purpose utilities. What is "unique" about them is that all of the utilities (there are over 130 of them!) are written in 4DOS' scripting language and are thus all .BTM files, hence the "BTM" in the package name. SO... in order to use the 4XBTM7 utility set, you will need to be running 4DOS.
